This diptych is from a series of photographs of women and people with uteruses in Alabama holding Queen Anne's lace. Historically, the seeds of this flower have served as a contraceptive in many cultures. In the summer of 2024, Alabama's state senators blocked the federal Right to Contraception Act, which aimed to ensure nationwide access to contraception. In collaboration with individuals from a state that has already experienced significant declines in reproductive freedom, my project contemplates the long and imperfect struggle for fertility management amid persistent threats. Currently, the only protection for contraception stems from the Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut. In his 2022 concurring opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health, Justice Clarence Thomas called for the court to reevaluate Griswold. These realities serve as the backdrop for my work.
