Artist: Celena Amburgey | Location: Kannapolis, NC
Kannapolis, NC
Hailing from the mountains of North Carolina and residing in Kannapolis for the past 20 years, Celena Amburgey creates work that explores memory, family, and identity. A DNA test dramatically altering her self-understanding led her to question inherited narratives and uncover her own truths. Using layered paint and collage, she examines the tension between belonging and self-definition, exploring how deeply family histories shape us and how we can reclaim agency within them.
Her work reframes limiting stories, seeking empowerment through vulnerability and reimagining self-worth. By peeling back and reshaping these layers, she transforms inherited narratives into foundations of personal truth, inviting viewers to reflect on the power we all hold to redefine our identities and sense of belonging.
