The subject of this painting is my wife of fifty-seven years, Mary, who passed away in November 2023 from complications associated with dementia. The illness progressed over several years, and as her caregiver I had moved all my art materials into the living room to be near her as she became immobile and blind and needed constant attention. The dementia took nearly everything from her. The night that this image was taken she thought the couch was her bedroom and would not go to her bed, so I let her sleep there. The next morning I decided to start this painting. During the day, she fell again and injured her back and was taken to the emergency room, and subsequently died within the next week. It took me six months to pick up my paint brushes to finish this painting.
