This piece is an exploration of my cultural hybridity, blending Yorùbá and Appalachia motifs. This reflects my expressions, identity and experiences while addressing the themes of cultural exchange, migration, and adaptation. It is a fiber piece made from deconstructed blue jeans sewn together in a quilt-like style. This symbolizes the integration of the textile/clothing culture of the Yorùbá people and the culture of American denim as a representation of my hybrid identity as a Nigerian and American. It speaks to the need to learn, unlearn, and relearn contrasting aspects of two very different cultures. I use materials and patterns that symbolize America, Nigeria, and my cultural adaptation process. The screen-printed pattern was influenced by the Àdìre eléko using the indigo blue as it is a similar color to denim.
