"My Inheritance" celebrates the legacy my grandmother continues to share with me: faith, a sense of duty, and her elegant church hats. Rooted in the Black southern church experience, this piece blends found and handmade elements to embody family, faith, and cultural tradition. Church pews and fans create an immersive setting; the utilitarian visuals of these icons evoke the warmth and reverence of Black church culture. Crafted for function, the thick cardstock and wooden handles of the fans add authenticity, while the worn pew provides a lived-in familiarity. This work invites viewers to experience the sacred and the personal, reflecting the balance between reverence and functionality in the Black southern church. Ultimately, "My Inheritance" continues my exploration of Black southern identity, using these symbols to honor my grandmother within the community that shaped us both.
