The Cut Boxes are a synthesis of two previous projects -- a continued meditation on the use of materials and existence of waste in our society, and an ongoing exploration of an atrophied attention to close, detailed observation of one's surroundings. These two dynamics are related as separate symptoms of a root state of inattention. The ubiquitous and often wasted (though uniquely recyclable) cardboard box, a largely unseen or unnoticed aspect of global commerce, is re-positioned as an art object through burning the image of a New York commute into its sides. The traveled landscape, like the cardboard box, often goes completely unnoticed. Their synthesis creates a humble but intriguing object that calls for, begs for a closer look.
