Colin Quashie was born in 1963 in London, England, and raised in the West Indies before emigrating to the U.S. He served as a Naval submarine sonarman until honorably discharged in 1987 in Charleston, SC.
A self-taught artist, Quashie's creative journey is fueled by the efficient messaging of advertising and motivated by social issues. His art is a conduit to explore challenging issues affecting Black America. A provocateur, he work often uneased audiences, which led to a series of censored exhibitions.
In 1996 he quit art and transitioned to screenwriting. Starting with MadTV in 1996, his credits include producer and an Emmy for documentary writing. By 2005, he resumed creating art, his craft polished to a satirical edge from a decade of comedy writing. His art slowly regained traction, but exposure and sales were not enough. He quit art for a second time and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from MUSC. Quashie now works as a full-time RN while produce his unique brand of art.
