The standard pain chart is a numeric scale used in biomedical settings to measure pain. Its origins hope for accessible communication. Yet, as the tool has been reproduced on medical charts, the simplistic six faces fall short in addressing the subjective, contextual experience of pain. Translated onto a hospital curtain, this chart forms a room the size of a standard hospital bed. The curtain isolates, yet large-scale faces form windows. Pairing separation and permeability recognizes the impossibility of measuring another's pain and the absurdity of happy or sad. To peer across the curtain is to see a frown turned upside down, oversimplified and exaggerated to the point of illegibility. The curtain fails to give privacy, raising questions about vulnerability and invasiveness. The pain chart fails to provide empathy, often trivializing emotion and pain. Frail as hope is sewing taught fabric to stretchy mesh, threading the air as if there is anything to hold onto but a flimsy smile.
