My work has always been process-driven. I create a procedure to put my materials through, which consists of burning, dying, staining, etc. I take those pieces and then reassemble them on a custom-made wood panel. The pieces that come from this way of working are often layered with elements of texture, pattern, and rhythm. But materials come with limits that must be taken into account. Letting go of the need to strictly control the process is necessary. Dye colors are never exact and precise color consistency is hard to come by. As well, wooden clothespins are produced to serve a function. For this reason, the wooden pieces vary in size and density just enough to influence the work on their own. However, by allowing these discrepancies, a new kind of imperfect texture is created. This texture creates wholeness, balance, and ultimately brings life to the piece.
