This painting is a commentary on failed relationships, situationships, and the loneliness that can accompany long-term singleness. As in the title, we often hear that there are "plenty of fish in the sea." However, we hold onto the idea of someone that is wrong for us, represented by the dead fish. This fish is obviously wrong and disgusting, but the hand holds on tightly because it is the only fish in sight. Ultimately, letting go will allow the viewer to find what was meant for them. As a Christian, I believe that letting go of the dead fish is letting go of my own plans that aren't doing me any good, and giving my plans over to a God who loves me and has an intentional plan.
