South Boundary Avenue in Aiken, SC, with its overarching live oaks, is one of the more iconic and recognizable roads in South Carolina. As such, it has thousands of images taken of it each year. This popularity was one reason I avoided photographing it. My daughter challenged me to find something new. It took me two attempts to make this image, because the conditions needed to be just right. Enough rain to create a big enough puddle on the side of the road, and no cars driving on this busy road. A rainy day over a holiday weekend in 2022 allowed me to make this photograph. It may look as though the road is flooded, but in fact, the puddle was only about 8 feet long by 2 feet wide and only 1"-2" deep at the most. By placing my camera lens right on the edge of the water, I was able to create this complete refection of these beautiful trees. My daughter again helped me with the title of this work, "Portal to Wonderland," as you are transported through the live oaks.
