This installation delves into memory, resilience, and the layered fragments of family history, approached through the lens of an archaeological dig. Using materials like wood, steel, wild clay gathered with my grandfather, a bird nest, and concrete casts of a family print, the piece resembles an excavation site where personal artifacts are unearthed. The print, depicting two birds, was discovered by my mother amid the wreckage of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, floating along the South Carolina coastline. Known to my siblings and me as "the rescued birds," these figures have come to symbolize perseverance. Here, the original print is absent, an empty nest in its place. By repeatedly casting the frame, I explore how we revisit and reshape memories over time, each recollection slightly altered, eroded, and yet enduring. This installation honors the beauty in piecing together fragmented memories, embodying the delicate, ongoing process of remembrance and the resilience found within it.
