"Roman Charity" is a theme that has been depicted many times throughout the history of art. In this parable of filial piety, a daughter sneaks into prison to save her incarcerated mother or father from starvation by offering to let them breastfeed. She is caught, but the loving act so moves the captors, she is pardoned, and the parent is released. This sculpture reflects my thoughts on the parentified child. Sometimes children end up in this situation through no fault of anyone, but rather unfortunate circumstances. Illness, addiction, mental health issues, lack of childcare, financial and emotional stress can all push a parent to unduly lean on their child, sometimes leading to this type of relationship. While not healthy for the child, I believe, paradoxically, a deep love can often be an integral part of it. If we are lucky enough to have a good relationship with our parents, and life's circumstances permit it, many of us will experience a role reversal and eventually become the caregiver.
