This self-portrait honors my journey of connection and acceptance of self. I have always operated as a lone-wolf, careful to not open up too much to anyone or reveal weaknesses. I recognized that by being protective of myself, I was also keeping myself from creating deep bonds with others. Realizing that I wanted to make a change, I began sharing my struggles, fears, and hopes with friends, family, fellow artists, and even strangers. I quickly discovered that I was not alone. Learning that vulnerability is the key to connection, I saw evidence that when I open up to others, vulnerability is reciprocated and bonds are created. Interestingly, my primary focus as an artist has been depicting Murmurations, or Starling flock formations. As a flock, Starlings are intricately unified, operating like a hive-mind as they perform aerial dances. Each Starling alone is beautiful, unique, and vulnerable, but together they create magic. I am learning that my imperfections are what makes me belong.
