After the political chaos of 2020, the pandemic, and the unraveling of my marriage, I felt utterly lost. I was treading water in the middle of an ocean with no land in sight and no sense of direction. "Somewhere" began without a plan, as a violent storm of frustration and sadness. But over more than two years, as my life changed, the painting gradually transformed and crystallized into the image you see. The entire painting was created stream-of-consciousness, without reference pictures or preparatory drawings. I worked intuitively with acrylic paint, which allowed for quick and dramatic changes as well as meticulous detail. I see my "self," the elusive "I," as a shifting locus of consciousness, constantly reacting and evolving, much like the painting itself, which I think of as an "epic doodle." Yet, unlike a simple doodle, "Somewhere" allowed me to explore the liminal space between intention and spontaneity, future and past, changing me as much as I changed it.
