In an exploration of painting in the expanded field, Camden Goddard's 'Portrait of a Contemporary South' draws direct inspiration from his experiences as a white male living in the Post-Antebellum South. Undercurrents in the work relate to the passage of time, questions of identity, preservation vs. erasure, fragility, social tensions, and the inescapability of inherent whiteness. The work pivots historically romanticized notions of Southern life against contemporary realities relating to iniquity and privilege, challenging the historical 'white-centered' narratives of place. A large 4'x6' installation rests on the floor. The work is completely formed of powdered paint pigment. Cracked surfaces dissolve a contemporary-toile design of historical slave cabins in forced perspective. 246lbs of carefully sifted pigment interrupt the pattern as an abstract self-portrait. The act of sifting is an introspective act in an attempt to sieve out aspects of the artist's own inherent whiteness.
