"Stack Collapse" is a response to a flash flood from TS Fred that devastated the horse farm I was working on in Candler, NC, in 2021. At the time, it was the worst climate emergency I had experienced. The water line was above the smallest horses' heads, they swam in their stalls to survive. After evacuating the animals and beginning the daunting task of cleaning up the farm, a history of Appalachia was revealed in the detritus that came from upriver. Alongside the river was a short-rail which served the now defunct paper plant in Canton. This work was initially about finding a coping mechanism through handiwork, care, and repair in the aftermath of a traumatic event. Miniaturization and repetition served as means to resist mass production, capitalism, consumerism - drivers of the climate crisis. The 1,382 HO scale shipping containers reflect the estimated number that fell into sea that year when Fred hit. A catastrophic event; we didn't know what was to come just a few years later.
