As a Japanese American artist, I have Japanese and American stories from my families that are passed down that I never forget. One of those stories is about how my grandmother experienced food insecurity after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when she was a child. An American soldier came up to her and offered her a chocolate bar, and she threw it to the ground because she was deeply distressed by what had been done to her country. Her daughter, my mother, ironically moved to America, married a U.S. Navy Veteran, and opened a cafe and gelateria and I ended up being a girl scout and was also selling chocolate bars at local stores as a little girl. I find this to be very ironic but also reflective, which is why I explore my inner feelings on generational trauma pertaining to war with the use of reflective materials in this piece. The propeller also resembles the symbolism of a peace sign which originated from anti-war campaigns and activists on nuclear disarmament to promote peace.
