Born in Springfield, IL in 1957, I grew up doodling and drawing amidst the clamor of a household of ten. Perhaps I was seeking a quiet refuge or drawing a distinction between myself and my seven siblings. In any case, I embraced art making as a way to explore the world around me, to clarify my place in it. I lived in the art section of the local library, and later in art museums and galleries. My graduate degree was in painting.
Today I primarily paint landscapes. I use opaque and transparent layers of oil paint to develop the color, depth and mood of the subject. I seldom refer to photos of sketches, preferring to work intuitively in the studio. I explore landscape imagery for its expressive potential, its unique emotional language.
Influences include such 19th-century American and European painters as Inness, Corot, and Turner. Like them, I seek a transcendent quality of light. I hanker for something beyond the seen.
Currently I live and work in Columbia, SC.
