"The Beidler Triptych" was created in 2022, for myself rather than a commercial gallery. It was partly inspired by a previous collaboration with South Carolina poet Glenis Redmond and historian Dr. Ras Michael Brown, that explored the Lowcountry legend of the Cymbee: water spirits reborn in America as 'mermaids'. I wanted to continue for myself the idea of an animist altarpiece; a triptych that conveyed the religious syncretism represented by this folklore. I designed the frames with architectural aspects of 19th c. Southern rural churches. The painting fuses the gold leaf and proportions of early Christian art with the animist belief that Nature also provides us deities. South Carolina's Francis Beidler Forest provided all the imagery required; the cypress knees most particularly, doubling as they do for the figures to either side of a traditional triptych. The Beidler Triptych was exhibited at the Morris Museum of Art (Augusta, GA) as part of the three man show 'The View from Here' in 2022.
