Julyan Davis is a British-American artist and writer. He received his art training at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London.
Davis' series of large-scale narrative paintings 'Culture of Honor', based on Scots-Irish folkways and their relevance to the contemporary South has toured museums of the region with accompanying concerts and lectures. His collaboration with South Carolina poet Glenis Redmond resulted in a spoken word record and performances based on the legend of the 'Mermaid Riot' in 19th C. Charleston.
'The American South has been my subject for 35 years. At first, I documented the vanishing architecture and landscape. For the past 15 years I have focused on the forgotten folklore and histories in several series of narrative work. These have allowed me to experiment and allow the subject matter to determine my approach.
