Ashley Anderson is a painter from Atlanta, Georgia. Ashley Anderson pushes computer visualizations through the filter of paint manipulation. His work pulls from the visual language of early videogames, however Anderson bypasses nostalgia by sampling almost entirely from games he has never played. What remains is the interplay of shape, value, and color in forming a representation, which Ashley calls the painterliness of pixellation.
This interpolation of 8bit graphics in paint unites his interests in color theory, the phenomenon of sight, and art history. The use of imagery seen through a digital eye adds an artificial edge which skates between abstraction and representation and places the work in the technologically precarious present. However, the actual construction of the image is still made by gripping a brush and layering pigment. The design is mechanical, but the execution and expression are fundamentally human.
