Intersectionality, the driving theme of the work, is the interconnected nature and overlapping of social categorizations as they apply to an individual. A theme that is prevalent in my everyday life, as I navigate as a Black queer woman. My blackness thrives within the rich skin tones of deep saturation and unmatched hair styles. My queerness shines within the bold expressive marks inspired by pride and spunky figural poses. My womanhood simply lies within every visible curved brushstroke and crafty pattern. The face is the focal point, as I believe it is the window to the essence of your soul. I highlight the face of each figure through the removal of worldly distractions such as clothes or overly defined bodily features placing their sacred vessels in a protective suit, free from judgement. This piece speaks to the isolation we still feel as individuals even when surrounded by familiar faces. The central figure looks toward the viewer for comfort and a chance to be truly seen.
