It takes years to grow the trees harvested to create disposable single-use products that are thrown away. In this digital age, the mass number of printed materials, like the magazines used in this piece, make a tree's sacrifice even sadder. Think about the journey of the tree as we continue making these superfluous products, and how it goes through so much only to end up in the trash. We determine the age of a tree by counting the rings. Thin layers make the larger whole, like the individual pages that comprise a magazine. My aim is to bring the materiality of the tree full circle; disposable products creating a new and different life for the tree. With recycling programs in South Carolina being scant, these catalogs would almost certainly end up in a landfill. Now, as art, the tree can live on as a beautiful, sad memorial to the life that was given to create the pages. In describing the materials and process, maybe it can help spur one more person to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
