"Wild Perceptions" explores my complex relationship with nature, highlighting the tension between an inherent desire for connection and the comfort I find in its more domesticated forms. I'm drawn to moments where wildness is restrained--whether through industrial materials derived from organic sources, or by reframing nature through a human lens. This work uses pine 2x4s, both derived from and detached from nature, along with photographic imagery of a store-bought floral bouquet. The bouquet, photographed in a terrarium, captures the sanitized version of nature I am most comfortable with, emphasizing this disconnect. Neem oil, known for its pesticidal and wood-preserving properties, symbolizes our attempts to protect nature while simultaneously distancing ourselves from it. My work invites viewers to consider how their perceptions of nature are shaped, questioning whether these interactions bring us closer to or further away from the essence of nature itself.
