Spanish Moss is such a delicate plant that needs the perfect conditions to grow. This airy plant has such a romantic feel as it drapes from live oaks, pines, or any surface it can grow on. I lived in Charleston, SC, for a year, and seeing the abundance of Spanish Moss was very comforting to me. It just rings southern charm to me. But I went to visit Charleston after Hurricane Hugo and was saddened to see that much of the small tendrils had blown away. With our weather changing so quickly, I am now amazed to see Spanish moss now in my hometown of Augusta, Ga, on the banks of the Savannah River. This plant was never there when I was growing up. I have even spotted some in Atlanta, but I am not 100% sure if nature relocated this moss or if a person put it in the trees. As an art director at a nature preserve in Atlanta, I am very in tune to the changing of our climate and I love focusing on the small bits of nature people might just look past.
