To Theme or Not to Theme…

“Wish You Were Here” Casey Schachner on display during ArtFields 2022. Casey used cocktail umbrellas for this installation!

  • “What is the theme for ArtFields?”
  • “I have an art piece that is small. Is this what you’re looking for?”
  • “My art is super modern, so that’s probably not what you’d want in a small town.”
  • “I don’t have the background you’re looking for to be an ArtFields artist.”
  • “Can folk artists apply?”
  • “It seems like there were a lot of artworks about Covid, does mine have to relate to that?”

When it comes to the type of artwork eligible for ArtFields, every year we receive questions similar to the ones above. ArtFields is an exhibition/competition open to Southeastern artists in all working media – that means that all sizes, shapes, and types of artwork may be submitted! There are no mandatory expectations for content or themes. There is also no requirement in regard to background or previous art experience. Emerging and established artists alike are welcome, and whether you are a full-time artist or practice your art in tiny slivers of time you find, you are welcome to be part of the magic in Lake City.

Each year, the accepted artwork is a mix from 2-D to 3-D, traditional to contemporary, small to large, and everything in between. We encourage artists to check out our website (click HERE)  and Facebook album (click HERE) of the ArtFields 2022 Competition Artwork to see the range of artwork and display locations.

The only requirement for artwork is that it must have been completed within the past two years. Because of that, you may notice that some themes naturally emerge. For example, in 2021 we saw many artworks that related to Covid-19 since many artists created work during that time and were informed by current events. However, there is no theme for submitting, and if themes do arise in the competition artwork it is purely coincidental because of possible shared experiences from the previous two years.

Don’t forget that submissions are due by 11:59 PM EDT on November 1st. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.
