Leigh Magar is from Spartanburg, SC. She moved to Manhattan to study millinery at F.I.T. & embraced the classic techniques of hat making. Magar then started Magar Hatworks in 1996 in Charleston, SC. Her hats have been featured in New York Times, Vogue, Martha Stewart, and Garden & Gun. They have been sold at Barneys NY & Isetan, Japan. Her clients include Nick Cave, Michael Stipe, and Elvis Costello. Her work has most recently been shown at 701 CCA in Columbia, SC (artist-in-residence and exhibition), Penland School of Crafts (hat making workshop), and a makeshift studio at the Preservation Society of Charleston, SC. Her new project, Madame Magar, was created after a heart blossoming experience. The project, an evolution of Magar Hatworks, is a creative studio that integrates fashion and art through hand-made garments and accessories. The project embraces the slow process of design with small batch, ever-evolving designs. Collections are exhibited through various installations: makeshift studio projects, storefront windows, gallery exhibitions, performances, collaborations, workshops, and events.
