Jim Toub, Professor of Art at Appalachian State University, received his BA from Hampshire College and his MA and Ph.D. from the interdisciplinary University Professors Program at Boston University. For nearly ten years he lived in Aix-en-Provence, France where he taught art history and studio art at the Institute for American Universities and the Marchutz School of Art. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in numerous venues in France and throughout many regions of the United States. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Aesthetic Education, FATE in Review, The SECAC Review and Ethics, Place and Environment. His current artistic interests are in the areas of landscape studies, cartography and urban design. He is currently working on a series of drawings and paintings inspired by the pattern language theories of the architect Christopher Alexander and the many imaginary cities vividly described by Italo Calvino in his philosophical novel Invisible Cities.
