When I returned to college to pursue my BFA, I was technology challenged. I quickly learned technology is everywhere on a college campus. I watched students walking and texting, sometimes to their demise, clutching their devices like security blankets. They are in the world, but disconnected from it in favor of a virtual one. Like Pavlov’s dogs, that red notification sends us into a panic that we are missing something. We admire and show off our devices like golden idols, and we are never without them. I believe technology makes life better in many ways, but balance and restraint are lacking. The fascination with being “plugged-in” lures us into a false sense that we are multitasking. We are never truly present in the moment. Our brains are not still; they are a cacophony of information, and as Einstein once said, “Information is not knowledge.” The title, based on a zen Buddhist koan, refers to a state of awareness in which, present and focused, you are one with everything.
