Charleston, SC
I was born and have lived most of my life in Charleston, SC. My family has roots that run deep in the community's past. I received my BS in Biology from the College of Charleston in 1980, and my M.Ed. in Outdoor Education Administration in 2001 from Georgia College & State University.
As a young boy I was fascinated with the outdoors and the photographic process. I had a primitive darkroom (a closet) before the age of 10. In 1972, I received my first 35mm camera, and by 1973, I had received regional recognition in the Scholastic Art Awards competition. The camera gave me the freedom to explore and record the beauty of the surrounding Lowcountry. In 1980, I began working for Jacobs Photo, which afforded me the opportunity to be mentored by some of the best professional photographers in the area. Happily, many of those friendships continue to this day.
My primary artistic interest is natural history photography, that is, the plants, animals, and environmental elements that make up our world. In this day where everything seems to have been photographed and Instagrammed to exhaustion, I look for unique, unseen perspectives. I often tell people that "You will not find me when I work. I am where and when you are not."
My work has been shown in the Gibbes Museum of Art, the City Gallery at Waterfront Park, and the Avery Research Institute.
