It’s all about the touch for Patricia Danco, and has been since she was quite small. The memory of others’ imprinted in old cloth and the softness of the sheep that once wore the wool, they speak to her when she works. She would say she was self-taught, but that wouldn’t be fair to her mother, her grandmother, and all of the other fiber artists who have shared their knowledge, skills, and passion.
Danco has been working with fiber since the age of five, when her mother taught her to knit and sew. It started immediately, that love. Later, when she was teaching herself new skills, her passion for history came about - fascination with creating a garment from a sheep’s coat, growing plants to create colors, learning to stitch the alphabet on a piece of linen in order to mark these much treasured pieces. She spent years as an embroidery artist, recreating those teaching samplers, dyeing them to look old, and selling them at juried shows. Now, however, freedom reigns. After moving to the beautiful South she is allowing her passion to expand, to incorporate her love for old cloth and new design, and to experiment and play. The act of creating now means more to her than the finished piece. Danco let the fiber or dye dictate what it wants to be, and she has been much pleased with the results. Here’s hoping you are, too.
