Charlotte, NC
Making Barbie doll gowns and ironing church vestments with her grandmother in Mt. Airy, NC, started Betsy Birkner down the path of fashion obsession. She earned her BFA in painting at Winthrop University. Painting and graphic design made up the formative years of her art career. Painting 1950’s cocktail dresses worn by transparent figures and designing for ad agencies, nonprofits and small businesses have kept her busy until recently. Her work now encompasses clay and fabric to explore creating three-dimensional ceramic armor, figural work and two-dimensional crown imagery. Incorporating clay, seed beads, pearls, Austrian crystals, antique doilies and found objects, she incorporates spiritual and religious cultural imagery. Photography, botanical illustration and teaching color theory are secondary loves. She has received two Regional Artist Project Grants from the Arts and Science Council in Charlotte, and is a McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Windgate Affiliate Artist Alumna.
