Artist: David Nuttall | Location: Huntsville, AL
Huntsville, AL
Originally from Aberfan in South Wales. David lived in southern England
before moving to Huntsville, AL in 1996. His focus is hand-drawn plausible
fictitious maps, which he has been creating since the age of five. David was
trained as a cartographer by the British Government's Military Survey
mapping at 16 and has worked in mapping/GIS ever since. He performs
Public Safety GIS consulting services in addition to creating maps as artwork from his studio at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment in Huntsville.
The maps can be inspired by real places but always include research into an area to ensure the realistic level of plausibility and provide the feeling that these fictional places could exist. The maps are created on a variety of mediums, including paper, wood, board, canvas, murals, sculpture and directly on skin. These temporary body art pieces are very personal, vulnerable and can be meaningful life stories that also provide an interesting connection with people through the art.
