Artist: Emily Booker | Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Chapel Hill, NC
Emily Booker is a metalsmith and mixed media artist from Chapel Hill, NC. After earning her BA from University of Vermont, she honed her technical skills while employed as a bench jeweler and started her own small jewelry business, Ursa Metals. Booker is currently an MFA candidate in Metal Design at ECU in Greenville, NC, where she is working to build a studio practice that balances wearable objects and conceptual bodies of work.
The layering and juxtaposition of materialsótheir textures, colors, imagery, and implied valuesóhas always been influential in Booker's work. She is currently working with metal, stone, textiles, paper, and light to examine the subjectivity of perception, how that becomes memories that distort over time, and the weight of those memories we carry with us. By using material as representation for the translation between perceived reality and remembered experience, she works to acknowledge the existence of multiple perspectives ó and the validity of each one.
