Raleigh, NC
A child of the South and descendant of Eli Whitney, I grew up in a small NC town with a mother who sewed all my clothes. Learning to sew while I was in middle school was my introduction to soft sculpture, though I did not realize it until I was in design school at NC State University.
As a lifelong artist and designer, I have worked in many media, but the call of textiles prevails. Textiles and apparel were a major economic drivers in the southern US until labor costs drove production to Southeast Asia. Clothing is still part of a universal language that cuts across cultures, providing beauty, utility, and creative expression. They can be timeless markers of special occasions like births, proms, ordinations, or weddings, that carry special meaning for the current and possibly future wearers.
Cloth and clothing do not need to be thrown away like trash. In opposition to this growing trend, I like to re-use of thread, fabric, and garments in my artwork whenever possible.
