As a teenager, unsure of her future ambitions and direction, reflection has been a common practice in my day to day life. Though reflection often creates room for personal growth, it can be difficult to face the versions of the past self and the results that have come from one's actions. When looking in the mirror, it is almost easier to remember mistakes than to acknowledge personal improvement and the positive aspects of one's current character. Through this piece, I wanted to depict the emotions involved with looking back on one's past self and trying to focus on the present and future. I studied chiaroscuro art styles and utilized heavy blacks and whites in order to emphasize the contrast between the future and the past. I believe the piece represents how I feel as I navigate my future and make the conscious decision to move on from my past self, who is very different from who I am now.
