When nostalgia sets in, it can make someone feel sad or lonesome. On the contrary, it can make others feel warm and welcomed. As a child, I often found myself crawling around the house chasing my cats wherever they went because their actions entranced my younger self. They would climb into the washing machine occasionally and I would attempt to do the same. Since I was quite small, I could fit just slightly, but as I grew older and larger, I found I could no longer fit. It saddened me at first, but I then stopped my attempts and forgot about the experience altogether. Then, one day, as I was doing my laundry, the memories flooded back into my mind and I felt a strong sense of nostalgia toward even the washing machine and how it reminded me of my early childhood and my two cats who have since passed. The feeling, however, makes me feel so utterly warm inside that the melancholy longing I have for those moments is simply washed away.
