By combining photography and textiles in Past Comforts, I created a "baby blanket" quilt to represent comforting spaces in childhood. I wanted to create an object often seen as warm and safe. This led to the incorporation of photographic imagery on a baby blanket. The cyanotype images are photographs I shot of spaces familiar to me from youth: for example, my childhood treehouse or the neighborhood I used to explore as a child. I also included images of a baby dress and added embroidery surrounding the garment to symbolize security evident in my youth. Furthermore, color choice was vital in creating this work. I worked with the blue of the cyanotype and incorporated a primary color scheme to further emphasize the theme of childhood. Lastly, embroidery lightly outlining the scenes references the inability to fully recognize past experiences. Were these memories truly positive or am I recalling my experiences wrong?
