Throughout this year, I have been working on a portfolio surrounding the theme of anxiety. One of the ways I handle anxiety is by picking at my skin. The textbook name for a skin-picking disorder is dermatillomania. The area that I struggle the most with is my back. I am constantly reaching into the sleeve or collar of my shirt to scratch and dig into my skin. As someone who also struggles with acne, picking at my skin only makes my skin worse. But, I can't seem to stop. It's an intense compulsion that I represented with strong colors around each contact point. Once I pick at one spot, I have to pick at another, and another, and the urge never quits. Hence the hands coming from each direction.
