The title "To Kill a Butterfly" is a play on the title of the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". The book discusses issues of race and social injustice, which is what I hope to achieve in this artwork. The artwork is two self portraits. The portrait on the right is a charcoal drawing with gray butterflies and a plain gray background. The butterflies represent lost hope because usually butterflies are colorful and beautiful. Black communities all over the country lose hope because of the killings of black people, stereotypes, etc. Despite the dullness of the charcoal drawing, the drawing on the left is more vivid and colorful. The orange butterflies flying all around represent a flourishing version of America, one that we dream of. This was a very long, tough process. I spent hours trying to get proportions just right for the face. In the end, I’m happy with the final result.
