I created this piece to convey the experience of having imaginary friends as an only child. Growing up I played with dragons, both toys and figments of my imagination. These characters brought me comfort during long, lonely hours at home. I always appreciated their company, but I can't help but be filled with melancholy at the fact that my childhood was so quiet. In the drawing, I am pictured playing with two mechanical dragons on the floor of my room, while a larger dragon watches from behind, wing outstretched in a protective gesture. The dragons and items in my room are all roughly based on things that I actually own, but with colors changed to suit the complementary palette. I used muted blues, greys, and purples to give a sad feel to the background. To direct the viewer to the focal point, me and the dragons, I utilized a vibrant yellow sunbeam that acts as a leading line and dark shadows against an orange rug for contrast. These colors are simultaneously warm and solemn.
