Origami swans are commonly seen as a symbol of beauty and elegance, so to illustrate the impact of beauty, and beauty standards on the human psyche, I showed how the swans were gradually burning. And, similar to how the piece is like a timeline, it shows how the impact of beauty standards develops over time. For example, beauty standards are implemented as soon as we are born, and we are raised and naturally made to believe that beauty is important and necessary in society. However, the constant compounding of the idea of beauty can lead to, or worsen many mental and physical health problems, like depression, anxiety, anorexia, body dysmorphic disorder, etc. Not only do the swans show this concept of the impact of beauty standards on the human mind and body, but the measuring tape in the background also conveys the same meaning. The measuring tape’s numbers get smaller as you read them, which can show how beauty standards can lead to the desire to lose weight or become skinnier.
