This artwork is a self portrait depicting myself staring into the distance, drinking from a mug. I was first inspired to create this piece through the starkness created between the difference of tones in the shadow and the figure. The piece is meant to show a captured moment, a daydream or a nightmare, depending on the perspective of the viewer. At the bottom of the piece, I let the water soluble graphite drip, adding an effect of seemingly fading to the piece. The top was originally a blank white expanse, but it looked empty and as I was working on a cardboard canvas, I decided to tear out parts of the cardboard, revealing the pattern below. It was meant to add depth to the piece, enhancing the interest. The piece is meant to be able to fit the ideas of the viewer, if they see someone awake at two in the morning drinking coffee and zoning out, or if they see someone waking from a nightmare drinking tea to calm themselves. It is meant to be a piece given meaning through perspective.
