Artist: Charles Norman Pinckney | Location: Athens, GA
Athens, GA
Pinckney is known for his detailed fabrication in metal of small sculpture and jewelry. He is primarily self-taught, beginning at the age of nine when he made tools that enabled him to carve wood and bone. Later, he studied with Eleanor Caldwell and Chuck Evans, confirming his desire to work in metal. He has been designing and fabricating complex compositions in titanium, sterling, gold, copper, bronze and steel in his one-man studio for over forty years. Common features of his work include moving parts, articulated joins, the combination of precious and semi-precious metals and found objects and the use of designs with a gestural quality. Born in South Carolina in the early 50s, he draws on memories that explore the long heritage of his Southern roots. Leaving home to study at Clemson, he decided instead to continue working with his hands making things rather than sitting behind a desk. Pinckney has received numerous grants, honors and awards to continue his work.
