Lauren Woods is an artist whose practice and creative research focus on the visual and conceptual possibilities within narrative figuration. Working primarily in the medium of painting, her current body of work is an ongoing visual development of a contemporary mythology. Influenced by the grand narrative of Western art history, paintings become a theatrical space to examine notions of gender, sentimentality, desire, power, beauty, and death. Poetic situations emerge from mixing revered sources with disoriented signs of masculinity and femininity, emphasizing the equivocal nature of images.
In 2010, Lauren completed an MFA in painting at the New York Academy of Art, Graduate School of Figurative Art in 2010. She has shown work at the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Mobile Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, as well as exhibiting nationally at galleries in New York City, Brooklyn, and New Orleans. She currently is an Assistant Professor of Art at Auburn University.
