In 1978, upon receiving my BFA in sculpture from UMass, I began my career working as a puppetmaker's assistant, then shifted to weaving which I came to do for a living. When I learned hand papermaking at Penland I combined this with my tapestries. In 1991, I received an MFA in Fiber Arts from USC, Columbia, SC.
I came to be interested in teaching, and began traveling around South Carolina as an Artist-in-Residence, and taught adjunct classes at the College of Charleston and Trident Tech. In 1997, I began teaching art full time at Fort Johnson Middle School on James Island. I retired from this position in 2017.
In 2005 I began writing poetry, which has become an important strand of my artistic life. In 2012, I received the Carrie McCray Nickens Poetry Fellowship from the SC Academy of Authors.
For the past 22 years, making books has been a consistent practice in my studio and in my teaching. I had an installation of handmade books at Artfields in 2017.
