Sandra Szkolnik was born in Lima, Peru in 1968. She has a degree in Graphic Design and Computer Applications from the Toulouse Lautrec Institute and from Massachusetts College of Art. She has always been fascinated with the art of origami and the infinite possibilities that paper folding offers, the planes and lines they produce, as well as the geometry, mobility and reversibility that are inherent to them. Responding to these qualities, she began to study geometric abstraction and to develop works utilizing small plastic articulated segments to form larger flexible volumes.
Sandra applies the concept of the Rhizome to generate the growth and interaction of polygons in folded structures. Through the use of elastic threads, in some of her works, she achieves a balance between the formal and informal, opposes the firm and the flexible, connects the static and the transformable and represents the polished and the handcrafted.
Sandra lives and works in Miami, Florida.
