Spencer Tinkham's childhood neighborhood sparked his love for birds, and he now captures their beauty and fragility in his work. He travels the country to research specimens in natural history museums, discovering birds with fascinating stories. Tinkham uses a box cutter and primitive tools to create enlarged feather sculptures from wood and paints them in oils. Like a scientist cites sources, Tinkham illustrates specimen tags from the birds that inspired each piece on the reverse. Birds have existed in every age of human history, and it is essential to be aware of their decline. Tinkham shares their stories of witness with us. Their fragile beauty enlarged so as not to be missed by the careless eye.
Tinkham's work is collected and exhibited internationally. He is a finalist for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Wildlife Artist of the Year 2023 award. His pieces are also in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and Dollar Tree, Inc. collections.
