Although I majored in art at the University of Alabama, it's only in the past few years that I've solely focused on paintingó when I had the realization that I was not going to live to be 124 years old because 62 was NOT mid-life. Before then, I'd worked in galleries, curated exhibits, advised artists, judged art shows and even had a stint with the State Arts Council. I'd done everything around art, EXCEPT actually painting. So now I'm painting and I've never been happier. My approach to painting is an intuitive style and my favorite era is abstract expressionism. I often paint imaginary landscapes that I refer to as my Kayberry seriesó a riff on Mayberry, my name, and my own quest of a lifetime to find an idyllic spot in the world. I've finally realized that Kayberry exists in my spirit, which then exists on canvas, wood and paper. I take delight in the various shapes and symbols that emerge from my paintings, the longer one looks at themÖ like taking a trip without leaving home.
