Kelsey Schissel lives and works in Asheville NC. Her father Lyle Wheeler is a master woodworker and blacksmith. Kelsey grew up using handmade objects made for every day use. She was drawn to clay early in life and when she first touched clay, it touched back, linking itself to her heart and soul. She knew she wanted to be a ceramic artist and has dedicated her life to that endeavor. Her new work mingles the aspects of functional and decorative ceramic art. She's especially drawn to the space between the pieces, developing those areas as she creates the vessels, emphasizing the negative space as much as the vessel itself. Drawing on childhood memories Kelsey creates ethereal and ephemeral imagined environments on the surfaces of her pieces. Her work draws the view in, capturing their curiosity for a moment of calm reflection. The real 22k Gold brings her pieces to life adding illusional dimensions of depth.
